First Semester Highlights

At the end of our first semester, we can sit back and reflect on what a brilliant semester it has been. Amazing sightings have been seen all round – Elephants, Lion, Rhino, Cheetah and even Leopard (somewhat of a rarity in the summer months!). Of course we can’t forget the general game – Zebras, Impalas, Wildebeest, Giraffe, Eland etc have been seen on every drive too, allowing for excellent practice of knowledge learnt over the semester. The real stars of the summer are however, the small creatures that live very close to us but often go unnoticed. They live very interesting lives and usually have an amazing color or funky body design like the dice moth caterpillar (see picture). With all these good rains they are out in full force and we do not have to look far to find them. These creatures are quickly becoming appreciated by our students.
Half way through the semester, students took part in a “Driving Abilities Test” whereby their driving skills were tested in order for them to drive our game viewers on the reserve. This is a necessary step to ensure optimal safety for all our students. From then on and until the end of the course, game drives are conducted by students, practicing skills such as 4x4 driving, entering sightings, radio etiquette, dealing with guests, ethical behavior on reserves etc and of course, practicing knowledge learnt on the course and how to relay that knowledge onto guests. The practical, hands-on training is a very important aspect of our course to ensure we send out professional, knowledgeable Field Guides, with great practical experience.
This semester has been a little longer than the usual – 4.5weeks. So as you can imagine, our students are ready to refresh their minds with a great week off. Some students are heading off to Mozambique, some to Cape Town, some are staying in the area and exploring the well-known Kruger National Park, Damian is going to Morocco (just for a day!) and Chloe to Kenya. Drive/Fly safely students; see you in the next semester!
